The Ellendale Fire
Department responds to structure fires, vehicle fires and
accidents, grass fires, hazardous materials incidents and
other good intent calls.
Each fall in conjunction with the National Fire Safety Week members visit
area schools. During these visits, students are
instructed as to how to be fire safe. Specifically the
department conducts safety presentations in the following
classes: PreSchool - Department and Firefighter
Awareness
Kindergarten - Department and Firefighter Awareness
First
Grade - Recognizing a Firefighter
Third
Grade - Home Evacuation Plans
Fifth
Grade - Fire Extinguisher Use and Care
All grade levels are instructed on the importance of smoke
detectors.
The District has established a fee policy for responding to incidents
within the district and also into the neighboring townships
along the South Dakota boarder. Fees begin at 150.00
and fluctuate depending on location of fire and time at
scene.
The Department is continually working to obtain funds to improve its
equipment, training, and services. In 2002 and 2003
the department received grants through the fire fighter
assistance program. These grants were used to upgrade
basic equipment like hoses and nozzles, were used to
purchase new personal protective equipment including
jackets, trousers, and SCBA's, and lastly funds were used to
purchase mobile radios to be used by individual fire
fighters.
