Fire, Rescue, & A Busy Summer

EFD started a long streak of calls on July 19th when EFD responded to a
grass fire approx 3E and 1/2 N of Ellendale. EFD
extinguished the flames that eventually consumed
approximately 20 acres.
EFD then responded to the first of a series of auto accidents. The
first occurred in Ellendale at the US Hwy 11 and Railroad
Ave intersection on July 28th at approximately 21:45.
EFD provided medical support to Ellendale Ambulance as they
removed an injured person that had been driving a motorcycle
that collided with a van at the intersection.
On July 31st EFD responded to a grass fire approximately 5 N of
Ellendale. This blaze was owner set in violation of
the present county wide burning ban. The blaze was
extinguished quickly with little destruction of surrounding
acres.
August 1st proved to be a difficult day for EFD as it responded to a 4
wheeler accident approximately 5 N, 8W, and 1N of Ellendale
at 20:15. EFD provided support to Ellendale Ambulance
and their efforts. In addition EFD provided traffic
control for air ambulance from Aberdeen.
The final call was received on August 2nd at approximately 17:15.
This was the third of a series of auto relatedaccidents.
This call involved a collision of two semi tractors and
trailers at the US Hwy 11 and 77th St SE intersection. EFD provided assistance to Ellendale Ambulance and vehicle
stabilization before managing traffic and removing the
debris.
Quick Thinking Prevents Larger Blaze
July 12, 2006
the quick thinking of Troy Olson saved acres of grass and
cropland when his baler became engulfed in flames mid
morning on July 12th. EFD responded to this baler fire
at approximately 10:15am and found the baler and contents
fully engulfed on a road approximately 3 east and 1/2 south
of Ellendale. Mr. Olson had been baling in the ditch
when the fire began. Mr. Olson attempted to unhitch
the baler in the ditch but calmer thinking told him to move
the baler onto the gravel road to reduce fire spread.
This action turned out to be crucial in the reduction of
fire spread and preservation of acres of surrounding crop
land.

Dispatches in Eight Days for Ellendale Fire
Fireworks, Tragedy & Dry Conditions
June 28th proved to be a hot busy day for Ellendale Fire.
The department responded to its first call of the day at
approximately 12:45. A garage on the south side of
Ellendale was burning. EFD responded with two trucks
and 7 fireman and quickly extinguished the fire before the
entire garage was lost.
The second call on June 28th, a one vehicle roll over, came in at
approximately 21:30. Upon arrival with Ellendale
Ambulance EFD provided support as two victims were removed
from a uninvolved vehicle. EFD provided vehicle
stabilization on the scene as well as support Dickey County
Sheriffs Department with traffic control.
June 30th proved to be a busy and tragic day for the
community and EFD. EFD responded to a tractor rollover
causing the fatality of one male at approximately 9:45.
Before EFD had completed this call we were dispatched to a
grass fire approximately 2 S of Ellendale. Cause was found
to be lightning. The final call on the 30th came at
approximately 21:30 when a tree in Ellendale Park was struck
by lightning.
EFD was dispatched again on July 5th at approximately 14:45
to a grass fire behind the residence at 79 Prarieview Drive.
Dry conditions assisted in this fire ignition.
Auto Fire Hustles EFD Into Action
May 17, 2006
EFD responded to an auto fire at 1100 4th Ave N in Ellendale
on May 16th. Upon arrival EFD found a Chevrolet
Corsica completely engulfed in flames. No occupants
were in the car and the driver had safely exited the
vehicle. EFD extinguished the fire and secured the
vehicle for removal from the scene.
Busy Week for Ellendale Fire
May 7, 2006
EFD responds to two incidents during the week of May 1st.
The first occurred the morning of May 4th. EFD was
called to a grass fire approximately 2 miles south of the
ND-SD state line along US Hwy 281. Upon arrival EFD
found a small fire and extinguished it quickly.
The second incident occurred on Sunday, May 7th at
approximately 12:20pm. EFD responded to a one vehicle
roll over accident on the North side of Ellendale. EFD
provided vehicle stabilization for Ellendale Ambulance.
Spring
Fire Season Begins
April 6, 2006
At approximately 3:30pm on Wednesday, April 5th, EFD
responded to the first grass fire of the spring season.
The fire was located in the Monango area and burnt the
residents garden and approximately 3 acres of grass around a
house and barn.
EFD Responds to Rollover Accident
April 4, 2006
In the late hours of April 3rd EFD responded to a
one-vehicle rollover approximately 1 mile north of Forbes.
EFD provided vehicle stabilization and extrication for
Ellendale Ambulance.

Responds to Two Vehicle
Injury Accident
January 10, 2006
On January 7th EFD responded with Ellendale Ambulance to a
two-vehicle injury accident approximately 1 mi E of
Ellendale on Hwy 11. Upon arrival EFD secured both
vehicles and provided medical assistance to Ellendale
Ambulance. To expedite the removal of one patient EFD
used extrication techniques to remove the passenger side
rear door and center post.
Ellendale Fire Department Holds Annual Meeting
January 4, 2006
Ellendale FD members met over oyster stew and chili on
January 3rd to conduct the regular January meeting and elect
officers for 2006. This years officers were elected:

Grass Fire Along Hwy 11 Calls Out Ellendale and Forbes FD
November 11, 2005
Ellendale FD and Forbes FD responded on Thursday, Nov 10th
to a grass fire approximately 11 west of Ellendale along Hwy
11. Working in cooperation EFD and FFD quickly
extinguished the 1 acre grass fire.
EFD Responds to 2 - Vehicle Injury Accident
September 25, 2005

On Sept 23rd at approximately 8:48 EFD responded to a
2-vehicle injury accident at the intersection of 5th Ave and
3rd St in Ellendale. Upon arrival EFD found Ellendale
Ambulance tending to two victims which were the drivers of
each vehicle. EFD provided assistance with the care
for these patients in addition to securing both vehicles.
This was done by terminating each vehicles electrical
system, securing restraint systems, and cleaning up each for
towing.
Van
Fire On Hwy 11 Dispatches Ellendale Fire
June 26,2005
A morning page dispatched EFD to a van on fire approximately
8 miles east of Ellendale. Upon arrival the van was
not actively burning and the occupants were outside of the
vehicle unharmed. Upon inspection EFD completed the
extinguishment of an apparent fuel tank fire.
Dickey
County Emergency Management Assists with Flooding at
Pheasant Lake
June 8, 2005
EFD in cooperation with other agencies under the direction
of Dickey County Emergency Management responded to Pheasant
Lake on Wednesday, June 8th to assist residents with
quickly rising water. Rising water was causing concern
to residents as it was quickly approaching homes and
threatening the entire dam structure. EFD assisted
with the filling and positioning of sandbags around various
homes on the lake.
Weather a Major Factor in 12 Hour Blaze
April 9th, 2005
EFD responded to an uncontrolled grass fire approximately 10
miles west of Ellendale at approximately 1:30pm on Friday,
April 8th. This fire was complicated by extreme
weather conditions as winds were or exceeded 40mph
throughout the day and night. The fire burnt an areas
to the south, west, and north of the home including
livestock production areas, hay, fences, and grass.
Mutual aid was called in from both Edgeley and Forbes Fire
Departments. Final extinguishment and departure for
all units was around 1:00am on Saturday.

Responds to Third Fire in Three Days
March 29, 2005
EFD responded to a grass fire at approximately 4:45pm on
Tuesday, March 29th. The fire was located approximately 6
west and 3 north of Ellendale. This fire was the third grass
fire in so many days. Upon arrival firefighters found
a dump fire that has caught a nearby wood pile on fire.
The fire was extinguished quickly.

Responds to Two Rangeland Fires Over Easter Holiday
March 28, 2005
EFD responds to two separate rangeland fires over the Easter
holiday. The first was a small fire located
approximately 1S and 1/2E of Ellendale. The cause of
this fire was undetermined and extinguished quickly.
The second fire was located approximately 5N and 1W of
Ellendale. This fire was the cause of a controlled
burn that got out of control. This fire burnt
approximately 160 acres and required the services of
Ellendale, Fullerton, and Edgeley Fire Departments to
extinguish. The fire on several occasions jumped the
road and threatened neighboring lands including CRP.
The fire also damaged several electrical poles. In
addition to mutual aid support Ellendale Fire Department had
to call on reserve firefighters, Ellendale Ambulance, Dickey
County employees, and several outside contractors for
support equipment.
Landowner costs for this blaze may reach close to $1000

Garbage Dump Fire
March 19,2005
EFD responds to a runaway garbage dump fire behind the
Oxenrider Motel on Saturday, March 19th at approximately
2:30pm. The fire was being tended by the owner when it
escaped and began to burn a slough area behind the motel.
The fire was quickly extinguished with no injuries or
damage.
